During World War II, Sidney D. Gell was a member of the U.S. Army's 131st Evacuation Hospital, where Ziereis was taken after he was shot. William Ornstein was born in Drohobycz, Poland (now Ukraine) on 16 Feb 1915. During the Holocaust, he was imprisoned in the Nazi concentration camps of Dachau and Mauthausen. Following World War II, Ornstein appeared as a witness in various German courts and testified against several war criminals. He later emigrated to the United States where he died.
